President's Message

It is hard to believe that the first month of 2018 has already come and gone.   January was a busy month for the chapter.  We had our first luncheon at Prestonwood Country Club, where Eric Harris with GatherRound discussed how to tell stories and sell ideas without slide decks.  Almost half of audiences don’t make it past slide one, so knowing how to tell a story without slides is a great skill to have in your toolkit.  

We also had our 2018 planning kick-off meeting with almost 40 members of our board and committee members at SMU.   A big thanks to Sandy Duhe and SMU for hosting the meeting and food, and thanks for everyone who attended and participated in the planning.   If you aren’t on a committee, then I encourage you to contact me and join one.   It is an effective way to grow your local network.   January closed with our final event, the Past President’s Dinner at Season’s 52.

Our February luncheon featuring Nan Banks, Director Toyota Center for Communication discussing Toyota’s Move to Plano:  The intersection of a business plan and internal communications strategy was a sell-out.   I hope you will join us for one of our March Events, which are detailed later in our newsletter.  The first is on March 6 and is a members-free breakfast led by Steve Lee, APR, Professor of Practice, SMU and Chief Pathfinder, QSI Group on Webtools to Better Understand Target Audiences.  Non-members are also invited for a fee.  Our first boot camp of the year, Developing Your Influencing and Persuasive Skills, will occur on March 23 led by John Millea, Principal and Founder of the Leadership Ring.  You may remember hearing John speak on culture and strategy at last year’s UnSummit.    I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!  And as always, send me your thoughts and ideas.

Ashley Capps

Ms. Capps helps brands uncover their story and share it with consumers in unexpected places and ways, capturing consumers’ attention and delivering meaningful business results.

As an integrated marketer, Ms. Capps specializes in media relations, influencer relations, consumer engagement and event management. She’s led campaigns for large consumer brands, such as launching Pizza Hut’s gluten-free pizza with Udi’s Gluten Free and Academy’s first-ever plus size activewear line.

As a member of the consumer brand marketing practice, Ms. Capps’s client roster includes brands like J.P. Morgan Chase, Frito-Lay, Chili’s Grill and Bar, Academy Sports + Outdoors and National Mango Board. She has also worked for challenger brands, like Udi’s Gluten Free and TreeZero, to create emerging and innovative work that keeps big brands up at night.

Ms. Capps graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia’s School of Journalism with a Bachelor of Journalism and minor in Spanish.

DFW Communicators Job Bank

Autism Speaks is looking for a Marketing and Outreach Chair to help with their Autism Speakers Walk this fall. This is a pro-bono opportunity. Please email Maria Krystofik  if you are interested or have any questions: maria.krystofik@autismspeaks.org

 The Marketing & Outreach Chair creates a year-round presence for the Autism Speaks Walk by building relationships with media partners and other key players within the local community and creating opportunities for coverage. The Marketing & Outreach Chair works closely with the Walk Chair and Team Recruitment Chair to attract new participants and achieve recruitment goals. This is a one-year term.

Time Commitment: 9-12 months. Approximately 5-10 hours per month, as needed.

PRSA Dallas Chapter News

The Dallas Chapter of PRSA serves more than 400 practitioners of public relations in North Texas. The chapter was founded in 1950, just three years after the founding of the national society. The chapter provides members with a variety of professional networking opportunities and services, such as the Communicators Job Bank, a monthly newsletter, professional development programs, monthly luncheons, mentoring programs and college outreach programs.
