I can’t believe the year is almost half way over. It seems like it was January only a short while ago, even though the summer heat tells another story. We are going to change our summer schedule this year and take our summer break from monthly meetings in June. Our next monthly meeting will be July 12 at Prestonwood Country Club, so I’ll see you there. We’ll have two events in June, a NuPros meeting on June 7 and a free-for-members breakfast described below.
Hopefully, you saw that our annual Pegasus Awards are officially open for entries. The Pegasus Awards recognize the most outstanding strategic communications efforts in the Dallas area developed from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. Members, non-members and students are invited to submit entries, so begin working on your entry to showcase your best programs and projects. We’ll be holding a free-for-members breakfast in late June on “How to Prepare an Award-Winning Entry,” to jump start your entry process. Silver Anvil Award winner Jody Venturoni, Founding Partner, LDWWgroup will lead the breakfast and is also a judge for the Bronze and Silver Anvil Awards. Guests can attend for a fee. Watch for the announcement for this breakfast, which will be coming soon. I’d like to thank the Honors and Awards committee of Rachel Deems, Nelli Tokleh, Marty Heires, Christy Sparrow, Kailey Schellack and Kelly Morris for supporting the Pegasus Awards.
Our board of directors and committee members were able to meet in person in May, and I am so grateful for all the work they do to keep the PRSA Dallas Chapter healthy and viable. There are too many of you to name in this newsletter, but a big thanks to all of you. We are one of the largest PRSA chapters in the U.S. with 367 members, and it takes a lot of work to keep us running smoothly. If you aren’t on a committee, then I encourage you to contact me and join one. It is an effective way to grow your local network within the Dallas communications community. And as always, send me your thoughts and ideas on how to strengthen the chapter.

Congratulations to our Newest APRs
Help us congratulate Sherry Carr-Smith and Brooke Traister for achieving Accreditation in Public Relations and join us for their official pinning taking place during the June monthly luncheon. Completing the APR is a great accomplishment— learn more by visiting praccreditation.org.
Sherry Carr-Smith, APR
Sherry has been a public relations practitioner since 1997. Sherry knew from the age of 10 that she was going to be a hard-hitting journalist, until she took her first PR class and was hooked. She has always worked in the non-profit world and has done everything from media relations to social media management, event planning to internal communications. Sherry has been with CHRISTUS Health for more than a decade where her current focus is translating the words that her IT team tells her into words that everyone else can understand.
She pursued the APR designation as a way to strengthen her professional development and confirm the strategic knowledge she has gained from more than 20 years of hands-on experience. Having letters behind her name also gives her a chance to explain what they stand for and why they're important to her as an individual and to public relations as a profession.
Brooke Traister, APR
Brooke has nearly nine years of public relations experience in agency, corporate and nonprofit settings. After earning a degree in journalism from UNT, she spent the first five years of her career at Tucker & Associates, a boutique agency specializing in travel and tourism PR. Most recently, she has served as a senior member of the PR team at Children's Health, and she is currently president-elect of PRSA Dallas. Brooke says that earning her APR has been an important professional milestone, helping her to elevate her approach to public relations problems and giving her the essential foundational knowledge to become a more well-rounded professional.
Colleagues don’t let colleagues study alone!
