“It is not enough to be quietly non-racist. Now is the time to be vocally anti-racist.”
-Angela Davis
The tragic losses of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Botham Jean and so many others throughout history weigh heavy on our hearts.
The strength of PRSA Dallas is in our diversity and we stand with the Black community and raise our voice in support of Black Lives Matter.
We join in demanding justice and reform of the criminal justice system and policing, the elimination of institutional racism, and the acceleration of real and lasting change, both societal and financial, that will drive structural improvement.
Decades of systemic bias towards people of color have created socio-economic factors that are disproportionately hurting Black communities.
Currently, the coronavirus pandemic is killing Black Americans at almost three times the rate of white people. The Black community has lost a high number of jobs since the economic downturn began and makes up a disproportionate number of essential and front-line workers, putting themselves at risk every day to ensure that lives are not disrupted.
This week also marks the anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre that killed nearly 300 black people, burned 1,200 homes, and destroyed Black Wall Street, a prosperous area of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Sadly, now 99 years later, 2020 does not present a new reality for Black people.
As professional communicators and storytellers, we all play a role in voicing the awareness needed to rally supporters locally, nationally and globally. PRSA Dallas will use our voice to agitate for action, call for aid and share opportunities for individuals and organizations to provide allyship.
This is the time you, as a communicator, are needed most. We hope you’ll join us to help eliminate racism, inequality and prejudice.
The Board of Directors of the Public Relations Society of America’s Dallas Chapter hereby states unanimously that we will take action to work toward building a more fair and just America.
