Employee Communications During the Pandemic: Old Habits and New Ideas

A Conversation with Delta Air lines Global Head of Employee Communications,
Gina Pesko Laughlin

Delta Air Lines entered 2020 as the first airline to provide the keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show and celebrated its sixth consecutive year of paying $1B in profit sharing to its people. COVID-19 quickly turned those historic milestones into distant memories as the company saw rapid declines in air travel. It quickly worked to change its customer experience, preserve liquidity and – most importantly – protect its people. Join Delta’s head of global employee communications for a discussion about leaning in to old communications habits while implementing new ways to stay true to its culture of open, honest communication and keeping employees at the forefront of everything they do.

About the Speaker:
Gina Laughlin leads Delta’s employee communications and positive employee relations strategies as Managing Director at the airline’s world headquarters in Atlanta, Ga. In this role, Laughlin leads an incredible team of communications professionals to promote and preserve Delta’s renowned culture. Together they create communications and engagement strategies and tactics that build trust among Delta employees and leaders and deepen the emotional connection employees have with the company.

A quintessential “culture keeper,” Laughlin’s Delta career also includes a role in the HR organization during which she built the company’s first Employee Engagement team, which included leading global recognition programs, the corporate employee engagement survey, employee-funded Care and Scholarship 501(c)(3) organizations, HR Communications and launching Delta’s first internal social media platform. She also spent three years in Delta’s flight attendant organization where she led business programs that were driven by frontline employee participation, including flight attendant hiring and onboarding, global crew layover hotels, uniforms, a peer support program, the Employee Involvement Group and Delta’s employee town hall program. She also oversaw communications and social media for the flight attendant team.

Laughlin began her Delta career with nine years in Delta’s Corporate Communications department, with experience in domestic media relations, crisis communications, CEO communications, and employee communications and engagement.  She led employee and culture integration efforts during Delta’s merger with Northwest Airlines and also played key internal and external communication roles in the company’s bankruptcy reorganization, including managing media relations for Delta’s Eastern U.S. hubs and focus cities of Atlanta, New York, Cincinnati, Boston and Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining Delta, Laughlin led executive communication, employee communication, and crisis communications as General Manager – Corporate Communications for Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA), a Delta subsidiary. While at ASA, Laughlin coordinated all communication activities related to the sale of the company.

Laughlin began her career in technology public relations at Lois Paul & Partners, a Fleishman-Hillard company located near Boston, Mass.
