As strategic communications professionals, we’re used to operating behind the scenes. We’re the ones teeing up our executives and spokespersons to be their best when they take the spotlight. It’s important work that often goes unseen.
Similarly, here at PRSA Dallas, we have a terrific team of volunteers who work behind the scenes to keep our chapter going every month. They’re the ones volunteering their time outside of work to plan our monthly programs (shout out to programs chair Nelli Tokleh), welcome new members (a stellar Membership Committee led by Melissa Flynn, APR and Thomas Bennett), support university PRSSA chapters (Emily Suied and team), run our social media accounts (Serena Jenkins and Whitney Thomas) and even distribute this very newsletter (Amanda Tower). And those are just a few of many.
I’m grateful for the leadership of these and others who selflessly dedicate their time and energy to ensuring our chapter’s success. Right now, they’re working hard to plan a jam-packed season of summer and fall programing for you. Keep reading to find out how you can get involved.

Now accepting speaker proposals for UnSummit 2019
Are you passionate about PR? Do you have a unique integrated communications story to tell? We're looking for speakers like you to share your expertise at UnSummit 2019, our third annual TED-talk style mini conference featuring high-energy, mind-stretching talks championing new ideas in public relations. The challenge? Each session must last 10 minutes maximum (aside from keynotes).
This year's program will take place Friday, Sept. 20, at the House of Blues Dallas. Topics can include but are not limited to:

Welcome our Leadership Development Program class of 2019
The first session of the 2019 PRSA Dallas Leadership Program was hosted at the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, April 27. Carolyn Covey Morris, APR presented a session on developing successful programs, Donna Coletti, APR presented a session on outcomes-focused planning, and a panel of nonprofit leaders discussed effectively engaging volunteers and leading through influence.

What is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month?
May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM), celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S.
A Brief History of Asian Pacific American Month
In June 1977, Reps. Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution to proclaim the first 10 days of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week. The following month, Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Spark Matsunaga from Hawaii introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Both were passed and on Oct. 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration.
In 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed a bill passed by Congress to extend the week-long celebration to a month-long celebration. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law.
The month of May commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese to the U.S. on May 7, 1843 and marks the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

The Dallas Chapter of PRSA serves more than 400 practitioners of public relations in North Texas. The chapter was founded in 1950, just three years after the founding of the national society. The chapter provides members with a variety of professional networking opportunities and services, such as the Communicators Job Bank, a monthly newsletter, professional development programs, monthly luncheons, mentoring programs and college outreach programs.
